What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth became a US federal holiday in 1981, after Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” advocated for acknowledgement and commemoration of the abolition of slavery. Every June 19th commemorates the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas to announce and enforce President Abraham Lincoln’s January 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation—the law that officially freed the last of 3-million slaves in the US.
How Can We Celebrate Juneteenth?
We can celebrate the official holiday by supporting educational events, attending community events, listening to the powerful music by Black musicians, and enjoying the outstanding food and culture of our fellow Black Americans.
In the cannabis industry, we can support Black owned dispensaries, purchase Black owned cannabis brands, acknowledge Black cannabis entrepreneurs, and honor our cannabis industry Black-owned businesses.
