How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in NJ in 3 Easy Steps

The New Jersey Medical Cannabis Program (NJMCP) issues patients a New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card. In order to obtain a card, you must be an NJ resident, have a qualifying condition, and maintain a patient-provider relationship with a doctor that takes part in the NJMCP program.

1. Visit a Certified Physician to Verify You Qualify

Before completing an application to become a patient in the NJMCP, you will need to visit a doctor to confirm your eligibility. The doctor you visit must be registered as a certified physician with the program, and you must have a provider-patient relationship with that doctor. Use the Find a Doctor tool on the state’s website to determine if your primary physician is a certified doctor.

In NJ, only specific conditions are recognized as qualifying conditions to become a medical marijuana patient. Some of the 17 conditions include:

  • Anxiety
  • Opioid use disorder
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Terminal illness (12 months or less prognosis)
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Migraine
  • Chronic pain
  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s)
  • PTSD

2. Register as a Patient with the NJ Patient Registry

In order to submit your application to obtain your NJ MMJ card, you will need to create a patient account using your personal information, your registry ID number, and the reference ID number provided after your physician visit. During the application process in the patient registration portal, you will be asked to provide several pieces of information, including:

  • Which Alternative Treatment Center (ATC) you intend to use for medical cannabis
  • A front-facing, full-face photo taken within the last two months (no glasses or hats, white background, eyes open, and no filters)
  • Proof you are an NJ resident (either your state-issued ID or two other proofs like utility bills, W-2s, property tax bills, pay stubs, or jury summons)
  • Proof of current government assistance (Medicare or Medicaid, SNAP, TDI, SSI, or SSD), veteran status, or that you are a senior citizen if you are eligible for a reduced fee

The fee must be paid to submit your application. Standard registration is $50 and is good for two years. Reduced registration with government assistance is $20, and caregivers or parents of minors registering in the program do not have to pay a fee.

3. Wait for Your New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card

Once you have filled out your application and submitted all necessary information, the state has up to 30 days to approve or deny your application. Typically, you can expect your card to be delivered within two or three weeks.

With your medical cannabis card, you will be able to purchase the amount of cannabis per month your primary physician recommends. Patients that have a terminal illness do not have maximum purchase limits. However, the standard limit for a qualifying patient is 84 grams of cannabis during a one-month period. It should be noted, NJ allows flower, oils, pills, lozenges, tinctures, topicals, chews, and syrups, but edibles that are food-based are not allowed.

How Do I Get a Medical Marijuana Card in New Jersey If I’m Not a Resident?

Out-of-state medical cannabis patients may qualify for a temporary MCP card that is good for six months. This card is non-renewable and designed only for patients that will be in NJ on a temporary visit. To obtain an out-of-state MCP card:

  • Visit a registered NJ doctor to obtain a registry ID number and reference number
  • Create an account in the patient portal
  • Supply a copy of the current documents stating you are a cannabis
  • Pay the $50 standard registration fee
